The air in the scholar’s study was thick with the scent of aged parchment and dried herbs, a comforting aroma that settled Carter’s frayed nerves. Sunlight, strained through a leaded glass window, cast dancing motes of dust across the cluttered room. I have seen… curiosities in my time, boys who spoke of stars and strange lands, but nothing like this.” He finally touched it, his fingertips tracing the delicate lines of the circuitry. A faint, almost imperceptible hum emanated from the device, a silent thrum that resonated deep within Carter’s chest.
