Chapter 7
The Scholar's Sanctuary
The scholar, sensing Carter's distress, offers him refuge. He provides simple food and shelter, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to the village's hostility.
The cobbled path, slick with the morning mist, offered little comfort to Carter’s bare, blistered feet. Each step sent a fresh jolt of pain up his legs, a constant reminder of the frantic chase that had ended only moments ago. He’d outrun them, the angry mob with their pitchforks and torches, their faces contorted with suspicion and fear. But the adrenaline was fading, replaced by a gnawing exhaustion and a chilling sense of being utterly alone. The roughspun tunic he’d managed to snatch from a washing line felt scratchy against his skin, a poor imitation of the familiar softness of his t-shirt. The pungent odor of wood smoke and something vaguely unpleasant, like overripe cabbage, hung heavy in the air.
He stumbled into a narrow alleyway, the shadows clinging to him like a second skin. The clamor of the village, which had seemed so terrifyingly loud just moments before, now felt muted, a distant hum that only amplified his isolation. He pressed himself against a rough stone wall, his heart still pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He was lost. Not just lost in a village, but lost in time. The memory of his grandfather’s attic, the dusty scent of forgotten things, and the strange, humming device flashed in his mind. He’d been so excited, so eager to see what the past was like, and now… now he wished he’d never touched it. What if he’d broken it? What if he was stuck here forever? The thought sent a shiver down his spine that had nothing to do with the cool morning air.
A soft cough broke his reverie. Carter froze, his eyes darting to the source of the sound. Standing at the entrance to the alley, silhouetted against the pale light, was an old man. He was stooped, his frame thin, draped in a dark, simple robe. He carried a wooden staff, its top worn smooth by countless years of use. His face was a roadmap of wrinkles, etched deep by time and contemplation, but his eyes, when they met Carter’s, were surprisingly bright and held a depth of kindness that Carter hadn’t seen since he’d left his own time.
