Carter pressed himself deeper into the rough-hewn timbers of the stable, the scent of hay and something vaguely animalistic filling his nostrils. Outside, the cacophony of the medieval village continued its relentless assault on his senses – the clang of a blacksmith’s hammer, the distant bleating of sheep, the gruff calls of merchants hawking their wares. He’d been hiding for what felt like an eternity, though in reality, it had only been a few hours since he’d tumbled out of his grandfather’s attic and into this bewildering, muddy reality. His heart still hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs, a constant reminder of the near misses, the suspicious glances, and the sheer terror of being a stranger in a world that seemed determined to either ignore him or, worse, imprison.

He risked a peek through a gap in the weathered planks. The village square was a hive of activity, a tapestry woven from roughspun wool, leather, and the occasional glint of metal. People bustled about, their faces etched with the hardships of their lives, their voices a guttural rumble that his modern ears struggled to fully decipher. He’d managed to pick up a few words, enough to understand the suspicion directed his way, the hushed whispers that followed him like a shadow. His strange clothes, his bewildered expression, his very presence – it all screamed ‘outsider,’ and in this era, outsiders were rarely welcomed with open arms.

Then, his gaze fell upon a figure who stood apart from the throng. He was an old man, his back bent with age, but there was a stillness about him, a quiet dignity that drew Carter’s attention. He sat on a low stool near a stall laden with parchment and ink, his hands, gnarled and stained, carefully arranging a stack of scrolls. His robes were simple, a muted brown, but they seemed to possess a certain gravitas. A long, grey beard cascaded down his chest, and his face was a roadmap of wrinkles, each one a testament to countless years of observation and thought.
