The heavy oak door creaked open, revealing a face etched with the deep furrows of age and suspicion. Elder Theron, his gaze sharp as a hawk’s, surveyed the small, cluttered study. The scent of dried herbs and old parchment hung thick in the air, a familiar comfort to the scholar, Master Elmsworth, but to Theron, it was the smell of secrets.

“You sent for me, Master Elmsworth?” Theron’s voice was a low rumble, each word carefully measured. He hadn’t come for pleasantries. News traveled fast in Oakhaven, and the whispers of a strange boy, found near the Whispering Woods, had reached his ears before the morning sun had fully climbed the sky. A boy who spoke with an odd accent, wore peculiar garments, and seemed to possess an unnerving knowledge of things he shouldn’t.

Master Elmsworth, a man whose frail frame belied the keenness of his mind, nodded slowly. He gestured towards a stool near the crackling hearth. “Indeed, Elder. Please, sit. The matter is… delicate.”
