Launch into Orbit
Against all odds, Alex powers up the alien ship just as the storm rages. They lift off, the alien world shrinking below, and manage to send a desperate distress signal into the void.
The wind howled, a banshee’s shriek tearing at the fragile hull of the alien vessel. Rain, thick and viscous like molten glass, hammered against the viewport, obscuring the already chaotic landscape. Inside, Alex’s heart pounded a frantic rhythm against their ribs, a drumbeat of pure adrenaline. Every tremor that shook the ship, every groan of protesting metal, felt like a personal assault. This was it. The culmination of days of desperate work, the gamble of a lifetime, about to be swallowed by the tempest.
“Status report, Astro-AI,” Alex’s voice was a raw rasp, hoarse from shouting over the storm and from the sheer exertion of the past hours.
“Primary propulsion systems nominal,” the AI’s synthesized voice, miraculously clear amidst the din, responded. “Secondary thrusters at seventy-two percent efficiency. Power core stabilizing, but operating at critical output. Hull integrity at forty-eight percent and decreasing.”
