The spiral path she drew with her finger was not on the floor but in the air between us, a thread of dust motes spinning in the late light. I followed it out of the kitchen, past the sink where the brick dust still clung to the drain, past the window where the crow had left a single black feather wedged in the crack. The path led to the garden, though we had no garden—only a patch of earth where the previous tenant had buried a dog, or so the landlord said.

Agota was there, kneeling in the dirt, her hands plunged into the soil up to the wrists. She pulled out a stone, not pink but gray, veined with white like the scar on my palm from the winter I tried to break the Middleton brick with my own bones. She held it up to the crow, who had followed, perching on the rusted fence post. The crow tilted its head and said nothing, but Agota nodded as if she had heard a command.

She placed the stone in my hand. It was cold, heavier than it looked, and it hummed against my skin—a low frequency I felt in my molars. This one, she said, is for the rafas. Do you remember the rafas?
