Chapter 7: I'm Not Going Back
A drone from the cargo company arrives in the forest searching for Lily. With the help of her friends, Lily hides, but when the drone finds her, she bravely tells it she belongs in the forest. The drone leaves, and Lily feels more certain than ever that she is home.
The morning sun painted the meadow in shades of gold and green. Lily was helping the beaver kits build a tiny dam in a puddle when a strange hum broke the peace. It was a high, mechanical whine, unlike any insect or bird she had heard before.
Professor Hoot’s head snapped up. “That sound,” he said, his voice low. “I have heard it before. It comes from the sky.”
Lily’s sensors locked onto the noise. She looked up and saw a small, silver object hovering above the treetops. It was sleek and metallic, with a single blinking light at its front. It moved in precise, straight lines, scanning the forest below.
