Chapter 4
The Man I Was Meant to Be
The allure of old ways faded. I chose righteousness, shedding the skin of my former self. Guided by His word, I began to grow, transforming into the man of God He intended, walking in His love and embracing a life of purpose.
The shadows of my former life, once so alluring, began to recede, not with a sudden, dramatic vanishing, but with a slow, steady dawn. It was like watching a curtain lift, revealing a landscape I had never truly seen before. The raucous laughter of the tavern, the hollow camaraderie of those who sought solace in fleeting pleasures, the gnawing emptiness that no amount of bravado could fill – it all started to feel like a costume I had outgrown. The threads were frayed, the colors faded, and the fit, I now realized, had never been right.
It wasn't a rejection of the past, not exactly. It was more of an awakening to a truth that had always been there, a melody beneath the cacophony of my younger years. Jesus, the Living Water, had not just quenched a thirst; He had shown me the very nature of thirst itself, the insatiable longing of a soul adrift. And in His presence, that longing was finally finding its true object.
My days began to shift. The frantic energy that had propelled me through nights of reckless abandon was replaced by a quiet hum, a sense of purpose that settled deep within my bones. The dusty Bible, once a weighty obligation, became a constant companion. Its pages, once a source of confusion, now unfurled like a map, each verse a beacon guiding me through uncharted territory. I’d find myself lingering over passages, the words resonating with a profound familiarity, as if they had been waiting for me all along. “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world,” John wrote. And I felt it, a quiet strength blooming in my chest, a certainty that the ‘He’ being spoken of was the very One who had drawn me out of the mire.
