With a mix of trepidation and excitement, Obed, Elara, and Barnaby set out from the temple. The familiar grounds give way to the winding paths of the outside world, their quest officially begun.

The morning sun, usually a gentle visitor that warmed the temple courtyard, felt different today. It seemed to hold a new kind of light, a curious sparkle that mirrored the restless flutter in Obed’s chest. Beside him, Elara, her braid bouncing with nervous energy, adjusted the worn leather satchel slung across her shoulder. Barnaby, a mountain of quiet strength, stood a step behind, his large hands clasped behind his back, his gaze fixed on the distant, hazy line of the hills. This was it. The moment they had spoken of in hushed whispers, the moment that had felt both impossibly far and terrifyingly close.

“Are you sure about this, Obed?” Elara’s voice was a soft murmur, barely disturbing the morning air. She nudged his arm with her elbow, a gesture of both reassurance and a gentle prod. “The elders… your father…”

Obed swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. He glanced back at the imposing stone walls of the temple, the place that had been his entire world. He saw the familiar figures of Levites moving with their practiced grace, their robes a blur of white against the ancient grey. He saw his father, a man of profound wisdom and quiet authority, standing near the main entrance, his expression unreadable from this distance. A pang of guilt, sharp and unexpected, pricked at him. He knew they would worry. He knew they would disapprove. But the map, the faded ink lines that promised a path to peace, pulsed in his mind like a second heartbeat.
