The wind whipped Obed’s tunic around his legs, a playful, insistent tug that mirrored the excitement bubbling in his chest. Each upward step was a victory, a testament to their perseverance. The air grew thinner, crisper, carrying the scent of pine and something else, something ancient and clean, like the first breath of morning after a long night. Beside him, Elara’s usually bright eyes were narrowed in concentration, her red hair a vibrant banner against the darkening sky. Barnaby, steady and solid as the mountain itself, brought up the rear, his heavy boots crunching on loose scree.

“Almost there,” Barnaby grunted, his voice a little breathless. He paused, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. “I can feel it. The air’s different up here.”

Elara nodded, her gaze sweeping across the jagged peaks that surrounded them. “It’s like the mountain is holding its breath, waiting.”
