A Close Call
Malakor, ever watchful, nearly catches them. They narrowly escape his grasp, thanks to Barnaby's vigilance and a bit of luck, reinforcing the danger they face.
The air in the ancient forest, once so welcoming, now carried a prickle of unease. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, painting shifting patterns on the mossy ground, but it did little to dispel the growing tension that clung to Obed, Elara, and Barnaby. They had been walking for hours, following the faint trail of the map, each step a little heavier than the last. The playful chirping of birds seemed to mock their hushed whispers and darting glances.
"Are you sure this is the right way, Obed?" Barnaby asked, his voice a low rumble that seemed to absorb the forest’s murmurs. He adjusted the heavy pack on his shoulders, his brow furrowed with concern. Barnaby, for all his strength and lumbering gait, possessed an uncanny awareness of his surroundings, a trait that had saved them more than once already.
Obed consulted the tattered map, its lines a familiar, yet still mysterious, guide. "It should be. The Elderwood Grove is marked just beyond this ridge. If the map is true, the path should lead us there." He tried to inject a confidence he didn't entirely feel into his voice. The thrill of adventure, which had once burned so brightly, was now tempered by a gnawing awareness of the danger that shadowed their journey. He remembered the chilling feeling of being watched, the fleeting glimpse of a dark cloak disappearing behind a thicket.
