The trees pressed in, their branches like gnarled fingers interlaced against the bruised twilight sky. Obed, usually so sure of his steps, felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine. The forest, which had seemed so welcoming just hours ago, now felt vast and indifferent. Barnaby, ever the steady presence, walked with his head held high, his keen eyes scanning the dimming landscape, but even his usual confidence seemed a little strained. Elara, however, moved with a quiet grace that Obed had always admired, her small hands brushing against the rough bark of ancient oaks.

"Are you sure this is the way, Elara?" Obed asked, his voice a little thinner than he intended. He tried to project a calm he didn't quite feel. The map, clutched tightly in his hand, seemed to offer no further clues in this deepening gloom. It was a tangle of lines and symbols, a language he was still learning to decipher.

Elara paused, tilting her head as if listening to a sound only she could hear. A faint smile touched her lips. "The path is here," she said softly, her voice like the rustle of leaves. "It's just… shy."
