The city, usually a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of traffic, felt unnervingly quiet tonight. Hans stood on the rain-slicked street outside the discreet brownstone, the chill seeping through his tailored suit. He’d been here before, but never like this, never with the gnawing certainty of what lay behind the polished brass knocker.

He knocked. The sound echoed, hollow and expectant. A moment later, the door creaked open, revealing Anya. Her usual composure was frayed, her eyes shadowed with a sleeplessness that mirrored his own. She wore a simple silk robe, the color of moonlight, and her hair, usually meticulously styled, tumbled around her shoulders in disarray.

“Hans,” she whispered, her voice barely audible above the patter of rain. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
