The ancient stones of the monastery, nestled deep within the rugged embrace of the Carpathian Mountains, seemed to absorb the weight of their journey. Brother Johann, his face a roadmap of contemplation, had welcomed them with a quiet grace that settled over Sadie like a comforting cloak. Hans, usually a whirlwind of controlled energy, found a stillness here, a peace that permeated the very air. Robert, the little Chiweenie, after an initial burst of excited sniffing, seemed to sense the solemnity of the place, trotting contentedly at Sadie’s heels.

“This is more than sanctuary, Brother Johann,” Sadie murmured, her voice husky with emotion as she watched Hans converse with the friars, his legal mind now focused on the practicalities of their new lives. “It is a haven.”

Brother Johann smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Faith provides, my child. And sometimes, it calls us to serve in unexpected ways.” He gestured around the serene courtyard, where monks tended to herb gardens and repaired ancient structures. “There is work here for willing hands and sharp minds. The monastery has always been a place of learning, of refuge.”
