The city exhaled its humid breath, a sticky embrace that clung to Hans’s skin as he navigated the labyrinthine alleys. The air thrummed with a low, guttural hum of late-night traffic, punctuated by the distant wail of a siren. Tonight, the Serpent’s Coil, the criminal network that had ensnared his life, felt particularly suffocating. He’d followed a whisper, a phantom tip about a clandestine meeting near the old docks, a place where shadows danced with ill intent.
His leather soles slapped against the damp cobblestones, each step a deliberate rhythm against the rising tide of his anxiety. The scent of brine and decay, familiar and unwelcome, filled his nostrils. He moved with a practiced grace, a phantom himself, his senses on high alert. A flicker of movement in the periphery, a glint of metal, and he melted into the deeper darkness of a recessed doorway.
It wasn't a Serpent’s Coil operative. The silhouette was too lean, too sharp. A woman. She moved with an unnerving confidence, her gaze sweeping the deserted wharf with an intensity that mirrored his own. She wore a tailored trench coat, the collar pulled high, and the faint glow of a streetlamp caught the sheen of her dark hair. There was an air of authority about her, a coiled energy that spoke of competence.
