“This journal,” Amy’s mother began, her voice a low murmur, “it belonged to Anya. Your mother, Sadie.” She met Sadie’s gaze, her own eyes filled with a mixture of sorrow and understanding. “I… I was her closest friend. We grew up together, you see. Shared everything.” A faint smile touched her lips, a ghost of happier times. “When she entrusted this to me, I promised I would keep it safe. I never imagined… I never thought it would come to this.”
