The air in the Bucharest hotel suite was thick with unspoken history, a palpable tension that had settled over them the moment Anya, Sadie’s birth mother, had arrived. Anya, a woman etched with the hard lines of a life lived on the fringes, sat opposite Sadie, her gaze flickering between her daughter and Hans. Robert, blessedly oblivious to the emotional storm brewing, was curled on the plush rug, occasionally letting out a soft snore.

Sadie’s adopted father, Mr. Sterling, a man whose stoic demeanor usually masked a deep well of affection, regarded Anya with a mixture of apprehension and a grudging respect. He’d been flown in with Robert, a surprise arrangement orchestrated by Anya, who, despite her past, possessed a surprising knack for connecting the right people. Now, the pieces of Sadie's fractured past were beginning to assemble.

“You want to know,” Anya began, her voice raspy, not quite meeting Sadie’s eyes. “You want to know about me, about why I did what I did, and about why… about why the Gamora put a hit on you.” She took a shaky breath. “It all started with your father, Sterling.”
