The air in the Bucharest hotel suite crackled with a tension that had nothing to do with the lingering scent of expensive perfume and stale coffee. Sadie sat across from Hans, her gaze fixed on the woman who had just confessed a lifetime of secrets. Her mother, Elena, a woman Sadie had barely known, a ghost in her childhood memories, was finally laying bare the truth.
"It wasn't just money, you see," Elena whispered, her voice raspy, the years of evasion finally catching up to her. "It was information. The Gamora, they dealt in more than just illicit goods. They dealt in leverage. And your father… he was privy to much of it."
Sadie’s breath hitched. Her father, the esteemed banker, the man who had provided her with a life of privilege, a life she had always believed was built on legitimate foundations. "He knew? About the Gamora?"
