Chapter 28

Episode 28

Hans asks Sadie about Her childhood and life

2 min read

The cobbled streets of Istanbul, still damp from a recent shower, gleamed under the soft glow of the gas lamps. Hans and Sadie had found a quiet corner table at a small cafe, the air thick with the aroma of strong coffee and sweet pastries. Robert, ever the furry shadow, lay curled contentedly at Sadie’s feet, occasionally twitching an ear at the distant call of a street vendor. Hans watched Sadie, her profile etched against the twilight, a pensive expression softening her features. He’d been wrestling with his own anxieties, the age gap a persistent whisper in his mind, and the ever-present danger of his double life a shadow that threatened to eclipse their burgeoning love. But tonight, with the hum of the city a gentle backdrop, he wanted to know the woman beside him, truly know her, beyond the sharp wit of Detective Sterling and the enigmatic allure of the woman he was falling for.

“So,” Hans began, his voice a low rumble, carefully neutral, “you mentioned you grew up in a small town. Tell me about it. What was it like being Sadie Sterling as a kid?” He stirred his coffee, a nervous gesture he hoped wouldn’t be too obvious. He wanted to understand the roots of her strength, the experiences that had shaped her into the formidable woman she was today. He wondered if her childhood had been as complex, as full of hidden currents, as his own had been. Was there a vulnerability there, a softness he hadn’t yet glimpsed? He found himself surprisingly eager for the details, for the mundane stories that painted a picture of a life lived before the Gamoras, before the shadows. He needed to see the girl to better understand the woman, and perhaps, to understand if she could ever truly accept the man he was, in all his fractured entirety.
