The canals of Amsterdam shimmered under a gentle, overcast sky, reflecting the stoic beauty of the gabled houses that lined their banks. Hans, a smile playing on his lips, steered their rented boat with practiced ease, the rhythmic splash of water a soothing counterpoint to the city's hum. Beside him, Sadie pointed out architectural marvels with an infectious enthusiasm, her eyes alight with discovery. They’d spent the morning lost in the labyrinthine charm of the Jordaan district, the scent of stroopwafels and blooming tulips filling the air. Later, they’d wandered through the Rijksmuseum, Hans finding a quiet satisfaction in Sadie’s genuine wonder at the Old Masters, a stark contrast to the grim realities he usually navigated. As the afternoon waned, they returned to their boutique hotel, a place they’d christened the “Hotel de Amour” with a shared, knowing glance. The lobby buzzed with hushed conversations, the air thick with the scent of old wood and expensive perfume. As Hans approached the front desk to retrieve their room key, the manager, a man with impeccably slicked-back hair and a deferential bow, gestured towards a small, brass-plated table. "Monsieur Schmidt, a telegram has arrived for you." Hans’s stomach tightened. Telegrams were rarely good news. He took the crisp paper, his fingers brushing against Sadie’s as she leaned in, curious. The coded message, brief and chilling, swam before his eyes: *“Sadie. We must travel to Istanbul. Something has come up.”* The jovial atmosphere of the day evaporated, replaced by a cold, familiar dread. He looked at Sadie, her face still bright with the joy of their shared adventure, and a knot of anxiety tightened in his chest. Istanbul. The Gamoras. And the unspoken threat that now hung heavy between them.
