Barnaby blinked. He blinked again. His whiskers twitched, a sure sign of bewilderment. The spot where his plump, juicy berry bush had always been, the very cornerstone of his morning routine, was… empty. Utterly, completely, and most distressingly, empty. It wasn’t just gone; it was as if it had never been there at all. A smooth, undisturbed patch of moss lay where his beloved berries had once dangled, plump and inviting. A low grumble started in Barnaby’s chest, a rumble that promised to escalate into a full-blown badger-rant. This was not how a badger’s day was supposed to begin. This was a catastrophe. This was… an outrage!

He paced back and forth, his claws leaving faint impressions on the moss. His carefully ordered world, a world where mornings meant the sweet tang of ripe berries and the comforting rustle of familiar leaves, had been rudely upended. He imagined the squirrels chattering with glee, the birds twittering about the sudden abundance of space. But Barnaby wasn’t interested in space. He was interested in berries. Specifically, *his* berries. A wave of indignant huffing escaped him. He tried to remember the last time he’d had to venture further than ten paces from his burrow for breakfast. It was, frankly, a dim and distant memory, perhaps even a myth. But the emptiness gnawed at him, a hollow ache in his badger stomach that only berries could fill. With a sigh that ruffled his striped fur, Barnaby decided, with immense reluctance, that he would have to embark on a quest. A berry quest. The very thought made his normally placid badger heart throb with a mixture of dread and a tiny, almost imperceptible flicker of something akin to curiosity.

His first encounter was, predictably, with Squeaky. The squirrel, perched on a high branch of an oak tree, was busy burying a nut with the frantic energy of someone who’d just discovered a secret stash of acorns that might, at any moment, be pilfered. Barnaby, still mulling over the injustice of his missing berry bush, ambled towards the tree, his gaze sweeping the undergrowth for any sign of a replacement.
