Chapter 4
A Chirpy Conversation
Continuing his search, Barnaby meets Pip, a cheerful and chatty bird. Pip, full of gossip and curiosity, listens to Barnaby's plight and offers some intriguing information about recent forest activity.
Barnaby, with a sigh that was more of a gust of wind through a hollow log, continued his mournful shuffle. The grumpy squirrel, Squeaky, had been about as helpful as a moss-covered rock during a flood. Now, with the sun beginning to dip below the tallest oaks, casting long, spooky shadows that made even familiar ferns look like lurking monsters, Barnaby felt a pang of desperation. He missed the comforting, plump redness of his berries. He missed the familiar, slightly tangy scent that clung to his whiskers. He missed his perfectly ordinary, perfectly predictable life.
He trudged along a path he’d never noticed before, a dappled ribbon of sunlight and shadow that wound deeper into the woods. It was quieter here, too quiet. The usual chirps and rustles seemed muted, as if the forest itself was holding its breath. Barnaby’s ears twitched, straining for any sound that wasn't the thud of his own paws or the frantic beating of his own anxious heart.
Suddenly, a flurry of wings and a cascade of high-pitched notes descended from above. Barnaby flinched, half-expecting to be dive-bombed by a particularly aggressive acorn. Instead, a small, brightly colored bird landed on a branch just ahead of him, tilting its head with an unnerving amount of curiosity. It was a robin, but not just any robin. This one seemed to be vibrating with an excess of energy, its little chest puffed out as if it had swallowed a drum.
