The sun beat down with a relentless fury, each ray a molten spear piercing the parched earth. Dust devils danced across the cracked fields, mocking Jonas with their ephemeral freedom. The wheat, once a vibrant green promise, now stood brittle and yellow, its heads bowed in surrender. Despair, a cold, heavy stone, settled in Jonas’s gut. He stood at the edge of the largest field, the drone humming softly overhead, its camera capturing the grim reality of his inheritance. It was a reality painted in shades of brown and despair, a far cry from the golden fields of his dreams.

His father, Antanas, stood a few paces away, his weathered face a mask of grim resignation. The silence between them was a chasm, deeper than any furrow Jonas had ever plowed. He could feel his father’s unspoken accusations, the weight of generations of tradition pressing down on him. I told you so, the silence screamed. This newfangled nonsense would be your undoing. Jonas clenched his fists, the rough wool of his shirt scratching against his skin. He wouldn’t break. Not yet.

“It’s worse than I thought,” Jonas said, his voice raspy. He gestured to the drone’s display, a mosaic of wilting stalks and barren patches. “The sensors are picking up severe dehydration across the entire south forty.”
