Chapter 13
Grudging Respect
The harvest, though not miraculous, is sufficient. The elders, including a humbled Petras, acknowledge Jonas's ingenuity. Antanas watches his son with a newfound pride, the generational gap beginning to narrow.
The combines, like lumbering metal beasts, gnawed their way through the remaining golden stalks. Dust, the omnipresent companion of harvest, swirled in their wake, a soft veil over the stubbled fields. It wasn’t the bumper crop of his dreams, the kind that would erase the farm’s debts overnight and fill the silos to bursting. But it was enough. Enough to silence the most vocal critics, enough to put a hesitant smile on Antanas’s usually grim face, and most importantly, enough to prove Jonas’s gamble hadn’t been a fool’s errand.
Elena stood at the edge of the field, her arms crossed, a quiet observer of the scene. He’d pulled them back from the brink, not with magic, but with a relentless blend of old-fashioned grit and cutting-edge technology.
As the last combine rumbled towards the barn, a small cluster of villagers emerged from the shade of the ancient oak at the edge of the property. Petras Bučys, his arms still crossed, his usual scowl firmly in place, led the procession. He’d been the loudest voice of dissent, the most vocal prophet of Jonas’s downfall. Now, he was here, a reluctant witness to the harvest.
