The sky had been a relentless, mocking expanse of blue for weeks, a canvas of despair painted over Jonas’s hopes. Each sunrise brought only a hotter, drier breath, and the earth cracked like ancient pottery under the relentless sun. The meager whispers of his irrigation system, a desperate contraption of salvaged pipes and a sputtering pump, seemed to mock the vast, thirsty fields. Antanas watched from the porch, his face a mask of grim resignation, the lines etched deeper by every parched stalk of wheat. The villagers, their own fields brittle and brown, offered only pitying glances, their murmurs of “I told you so” a constant, stinging wind.

Jonas, however, refused to be broken. He spent his days hunched over his tablet, the screen a beacon in the dusty twilight, deciphering satellite imagery and weather models. The drones, like metallic dragonflies, had mapped every inch of the land, identifying the most stressed areas, the subtle dips and rises where moisture might still linger, or where it might be coaxed back. He’d poured his meager savings, the secret stash he’d squirreled away from his part-time work before the full weight of the farm’s debt had crushed him, into this technology. It felt like a reckless gamble, a fool’s errand against nature’s fury, but it was the only weapon he had.

Elena’s visits were a lifeline. She’d arrive in her sensible car, a splash of color against the muted landscape, her presence a balm to his frayed nerves. She brought not just practical advice on cost-effectiveness and potential grants, but a quiet strength that mirrored his own.
