The night air, usually alive with the playful blinking of fireflies, held a different kind of magic this evening. Kro, nestled amongst the soft moss at the edge of the whispering woods, watched the other fireflies with a familiar ache in his tiny chest. Their lights danced in intricate patterns, weaving a tapestry of joy against the deepening twilight. They zipped and zoomed, their laughter, like tinkling bells, carried on the gentle breeze. He knew their games – the chase for the brightest dewdrop, the race to the tallest fern, the synchronized blinking chorus that echoed through the meadow. He yearned to join them, to feel the exhilaration of their shared flights, but a knot of shyness always tightened in his belly, keeping him rooted to his quiet spot.

But the moment he heard the rustle of wings nearby, his light would dim, and he’d shrink back into himself, his practiced patterns forgotten.

Tonight, however, a different kind of light had caught his attention, and then, a different sound. A soft, wavering cry, like a tiny sigh caught on the wind, had drifted from the deeper woods. It was a sound of distress, a sound that tugged at something deep within Kro. He’d seen Luna, the little glow-worm, earlier that day, her small, luminous body tracing slow paths near the berry bushes. He knew she often got lost, her fascination with the vibrant colors of flowers leading her astray.
