The evening air, usually a gentle hum of chirping crickets and rustling leaves, held a new sound tonight: a soft, tremulous sob. Kro, perched on a dew-kissed fern frond, his own little light pulsing with a shy, hesitant rhythm, tilted his head. The sound wasn't like the cheerful chirps of his firefly friends, nor the happy buzz of the bees settling in for the night. This was a sound of pure sadness, a tiny lament lost in the deepening shadows of the Whispering Woods.

He scanned the darkening undergrowth, his big, observant eyes searching. The other fireflies were already engaged in their nightly game of “Tag the Twinkle,” their synchronized flashes creating dazzling patterns amongst the ancient oaks. Kro watched them, a familiar ache of longing in his tiny chest. He knew all their flickers, their secret flashes that meant “you’re it!” He even practiced his own patterns in the quiet solitude of his favorite mushroom, a soft, pale cap nestled by the mossy roots of a giant redwood. But the thought of flying into the boisterous swirl of their games, of his light perhaps flickering at the wrong moment, or him being too slow, made his antennae droop.

Then he saw her. A tiny, pearly glow, barely discernible against the dark earth, was moving erratically, accompanied by those heartbreaking sobs. It was Luna, the glow-worm he'd sometimes seen near the edge of the meadow, her light a steady, soft beacon. But tonight, her glow was dim, flickering with distress, and she seemed utterly, hopelessly lost. She stumbled over a fallen twig, and another sob escaped her, a tiny sound swallowed by the vastness of the woods.
