The line wavered before me, a phosphorescent scar across the asphalt. I had been running since the light went out—Lucius’s light, or perhaps the light of that certain fundament, 7777, which I never understood but felt in my chest like a stopped clock. Now the Pentagon sat on the horizon, a geometric bruise against the Roman sky. Rome. Laura. I could not separate them anymore.
Laura’s hair was the color of the Tiber at dusk, and she ran beside me, though she had never been there. Begiottti—the word stuck in my throat like a stone. To run, to flee, to chase something that is already gone. Her footsteps fell in sync with mine, but she left no prints. That was the first sign.
“The reptiles are watching,” she said, her voice a thread of static. “From the walls of the Pentagon, from the Colosseum’s arches. They remember the future.”
