The air in Master Silas’s study was thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient parchment. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating a room crammed with shelves overflowing with leather-bound tomes and strange, knotted artifacts. Elara stood just inside the doorway, her knitting bag clutched tightly in her hand, the familiar weight of her half-finished shawl a small comfort against the tremor that ran through her. She had come seeking answers, but the silence of the room, broken only by the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner, felt more like a question than a solution.

Master Silas sat behind a vast oak desk, his weathered hands resting on a faded map of the village and its surrounding woods. His face, a roadmap of wrinkles, was usually a mask of serene wisdom, but today, a subtle tension pulled at the corners of his eyes. He looked up as Elara entered, his gaze sharp, taking in her hesitant posture and the way she nervously smoothed the wool of her skirt.

“Elara,” he said, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. “You find yourself drawn to the shadows, it seems.”
