Chapter 5
Lyra's Loose Lips
The village gossip, Lyra, spreads wild theories about the strange events. Elara overhears a fragment of gossip that, combined with her knitting, hints at a forgotten village tale.
The click of Elara’s needles was usually a gentle, rhythmic balm, a counterpoint to the rustling leaves outside her cottage window. Today, however, the sound felt brittle, like tiny bones snapping. The yarn, a soft, earthy brown, was resisting her, twisting stubbornly in her hands as if it, too, felt the disquiet that had settled over Oakhaven like a persistent fog. Elara, pulling her shawl tighter, had been gathering herbs when she’d caught fragments of Lyra’s pronouncements. “...and then, I tell you, Mrs. Gable saw it! A shadow, long and thin, slithering by her window, right before her prize-winning pumpkins withered to dust!” Lyra’s voice, already high, had climbed another octave. “It’s the old stories, I say! The ones Master Silas always hushes up when the children get too close. Something is stirring, something that remembers!”
