The air in the hidden sanctuary was thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient parchment, a fragrance that clung to Sir Kaelan like a second skin. He sat opposite the Archivist, her eyes, pools of liquid moonlight, reflecting the flickering lamplight. For weeks, he had lived among these few, the quiet custodians of a world that had seemingly vanished. They moved with a gentle purpose, their days a tapestry of mending, tending, and the soft murmur of shared stories. Yet, it was the Archivist’s words, delivered with the quiet certainty of a river flowing to the sea, that had truly begun to unravel the knot of confusion that had tightened in Kaelan’s chest for so long.
“The plague, Sir Kaelan,” she began, her voice a low hum that vibrated with the weight of ages, “was not an end. It was a passage.”
Kaelan leaned forward, his gauntleted hands resting on his knees. He had seen the aftermath, the spectral stillness, the chilling echo of that dreadful rhyme – *ring around the rosie, a pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down.* He had walked through empty villages, the wind whistling through vacant windows like a mournful sigh.
