Aris begins to learn the orc language, uncovering a rich, peaceful culture hidden beneath a fearsome facade. Stories, songs, and a deep connection to nature emerge.
The air in the valley hummed with a different kind of quiet than Aris had ever known. It wasn't the absence of noise, but a presence of it, a symphony of rustles, chirps, and the distant murmur of a hidden stream. He sat cross-legged on a moss-covered stone, Grak’s weathered hand resting on his shoulder, his gnarled finger tracing shapes in the dirt. Aris squinted at the symbols, each one a tiny universe of meaning, a building block in the grand, intricate edifice of the orcish tongue.
“This,” Grak rumbled, his voice like stones tumbling in a riverbed, “is the mark of the deep root. It speaks of beginnings, of the earth that holds us.” He pointed to another symbol, a delicate spiral. “And this, the wind’s whisper. It carries stories, dreams, the breath of the world.”
Aris repeated the sounds, his tongue clumsy, his throat tight with the unfamiliar vibrations. “Deeep… root. Wiiiind… whis-per.” He felt a flush creep up his neck. It was so different from the crisp, precise sounds of human speech, so full of the very essence of the things they represented.
