The First Encounter

Aris meets Grak, an ancient and wise orc. Their initial interaction is cautious, a silent study before the first tentative words bridge the immense divide.

The air in the valley hung thick and still, a breath held by the ancient mountains that cupped it. Dr. Aris Thorne, his heart a hummingbird’s frantic flutter beneath his ribs, stepped from the shadow of a gnarled, moss-draped oak. Before him lay a clearing, bathed in the soft, dappled sunlight that filtered through a canopy of leaves so dense they seemed to weave a living roof. It was here, in this hushed sanctuary, that he was to meet Grak, the elder.

Aris adjusted the satchel slung across his shoulder, the worn leather a familiar comfort against the tremor in his hands. He’d rehearsed the greetings a hundred times in his mind, practiced the carefully chosen words that were meant to convey respect and a genuine desire for understanding. Yet, as he scanned the clearing, a wave of apprehension washed over him. The orcs were not known for their welcoming nature, not to humans, at least. They were creatures of myth and fear, whispered about in hushed tones around hearth fires, depicted in crude carvings as monstrous and savage.

Then, he saw him. Seated on a fallen log, his immense form a silhouette against the emerald backdrop, was an orc. But this was not the hulking brute of legend. This orc was ancient. His skin, the color of rich, dark earth, was etched with a thousand wrinkles, each one a testament to seasons passed, to stories witnessed. His tusks, though prominent, were worn smooth with age, and his eyes, deep-set beneath a heavy brow, held a profound stillness, like pools reflecting the wisdom of the ages. He was Grak.
