The green of the garden was a lie. I saw that now, standing in the kitchen of the flat in Jurbarkas, watching the dust motes dance in the slanted afternoon light. The sage walls of my nursery had promised a soft world, but the world outside was hard and broken glass under bare feet.

They came with their protocols and their codes, their hands reaching for me like I was a thing to be managed. "Control," they whispered, but I had learned the impossible lesson early: you cannot control another soul. Not with love, not with law, not with the sharp edge of a word meant to cut. I had tried, in my own way, to make them see. To tell them I was not their spirit of duty, not their sacrificial lamb for the old men's games. But they heard only static.

The kitchen smelled of boiled potatoes and something sour. I remembered the garden, the way the grass had felt between my fingers, the way the sun had seemed to promise everything. Now the sun was a cold witness. The police had come yesterday, their faces masks of official concern. "The woman is mad," they said to each other, not quite low enough. But I was not mad. I was the only one seeing clearly.
