Chapter 4
Lily's New Crossing Song
Lily learns her lesson well. Now, before she crosses, she looks left, then right, then left again. With watchful eyes and a happy heart, she sings her new crossing song, always safe and sound.
Lily’s bright eyes, like two polished blueberries, had always loved to dance across the world. They sparkled with the joy of discovery, catching the sunbeams that dappled the grass and tracing the flight of busy bees. Today, those same eyes were fixed across the street, where her friend’s house stood, a beacon of laughter and shared secrets. The air hummed with the promise of afternoon play, a melody only best friends could compose. A gentle breeze, smelling of blooming roses, whispered through Lily’s hair, tugging at her imagination. She could almost hear her friend’s happy call, beckoning her over for a grand adventure.
The street, however, was a different kind of world. It was a wide, grey ribbon that stretched out, carrying its own swift, rumbling song. Cars, like shiny beetles with bright, unblinking eyes, zipped and zoomed along its surface. Lily knew about the cars, of course. She’d seen them, heard them, felt their distant breath as they passed. But today, the pull of friendship was a stronger current than the hum of the road. Her feet, light as dandelion seeds, were already eager to carry her to the other side.
She took a step, then another, her gaze still locked on the inviting doorway of her friend’s house. The world of the street, with its whizzing metal and its deep, resonant growls, seemed to fade into a distant whisper. It was a sound she was accustomed to, a background tune to her sunny day. She didn't notice the vibrant red car, sleek and swift, approaching like a determined hunter. Its headlights, like glaring eyes, were focused forward, on the path ahead, not on the small, bright figure at the edge of the pavement.
