A Desperate Bargain
The air in the den hung thick and heavy, not just with the usual earthy scent of fur and family, but with a palpable worry that clung to every breath. Kai, curled at the edge of the sleeping mats, felt it seep into his small bones, a cold knot in his tummy that had nothing to do with hunger. He’d seen it in the way his mother’s ears drooped, in the hushed, urgent whispers of the elders, in the listless sighs of the younger cubs who usually tumbled and nipped with boundless energy. Now, they lay still, their fur dull, their eyes clouded.
Elder Maeve’s voice, usually a melodic river flowing through the den, was now a strained murmur, a melody played on a broken instrument. Kai, pretending to be asleep, strained his ears, catching fragments of words that sparked with a desperate light. "…the ancient lore… a cure… the shadowed moon… only a true wolf…" He knew, with a certainty that settled deep in his chest, that this was about the sickness. It was stealing the strength from his pack, the vibrant pulse of their wild hearts.
He’d overheard more, late into the night, when the moon, a sliver of pale light, cast long, dancing shadows across the den floor. Elder Maeve and a few other elders spoke of a legend, a whispered hope passed down through generations. A cure, hidden away, guarded by trials only the purest of wolf hearts could endure. A quest, they said, that was too dangerous, too perilous. A quest that required a true wolf.
