The ancient forest, usually a symphony of rustling leaves and chirping birds, now held a hushed, anxious quiet. Sunlight, dappled and hesitant, filtered through the thick canopy, painting shifting patterns on the moss-covered ground. Kai, his small frame cloaked in a tunic the color of forest shadows, moved with a stealth that belied his years. Each breath he took was a careful thing, a silent prayer to the wild spirits he was beginning to understand. His heart thumped a frantic rhythm against his ribs, a wild drumbeat mirroring the unease that had settled over his village like an early frost.

He remembered the hushed conversations, the worried glances exchanged between the elders. He’d hidden behind the gnarled roots of the elder oak, his ears straining to catch every word. Elder Maeve’s voice, usually a gentle murmur, had been laced with a gravity that sent shivers down his spine. “The Moonpetal’s bloom is fading,” she’d said, her gaze fixed on the distant, shadowed peaks. “And with it, the strength of our pack. The sickness… it drains the very spirit.”

Roric, his brow furrowed with concern, had paced restlessly. “We have tried every poultice, every chant. Nothing holds it back. The young ones weaken, Maeve. Their fur dulls, their eyes grow dim.”
