My new gig at "The Daily Grind" was supposed to be my stepping stone, my gilded path to Jake’s attention. Chloe, bless her pragmatic heart, had called it "destiny on a coffee cup." I, on the other hand, was starting to suspect it was more like "disaster on a latte." My brain, usually a well-oiled machine when it came to analyzing Jake’s every Instagram story for hidden meaning, turned into a sputtering engine the moment I donned the dreaded brown apron.

The first few days were a blur of dropped pastries, incorrectly frothed milk, and a near-catastrophic incident involving a rogue blueberry muffin and Mrs. Henderson's prize-winning poodle. The poodle, thankfully, survived, though its fluffy white coat bore the faint, indelible stain of my incompetence. My boss, a perpetually stressed woman named Brenda whose hair seemed to defy gravity, had the look of someone who regretted every life choice that led her to employ me.
