Chapter 2

Scrolling for Signs

Echa meticulously analyzes Jake's social media, searching for hidden messages. Her pragmatic friend Chloe teases her about her unrealistic hope that Jake remembers their brief meeting.

The glow of my phone screen was the only light in my room, a beacon in the otherwise dark abyss of my student loan debt. It was 2 AM, and I was deep in the digital trenches, excavating Jake Echa’s social media history with the fervor of an archaeologist unearthing a lost city. Except, instead of gold artifacts, I was looking for… well, a sign. A divine intervention. A cosmic wink that said, "Hey, Echa, remember that girl you bumped into in aisle three last week? Yeah, she’s kind of a big deal now.”

Chloe, my best friend and resident reality checker, would have a field day with this. She called my Jake Echa obsession a “cult of personality,” and my grocery store encounter a “minor collision of organic produce and existential dread.” But she didn’t understand. This wasn't just any celebrity crush. This was Jake Echa. The voice that could soothe a raging tempest, the smile that could melt glaciers, the man whose perfectly sculpted jawline probably had its own fan club. And we had met. Sort of. It was less of a meeting and more of a brief, awkward ballet of apologies and dropped apples. But still!

I scrolled through his Instagram feed, a meticulously curated collection of artfully lit selfies, behind-the-scenes glimpses of his ridiculously glamorous life, and the occasional cryptic caption that I was convinced held the key to the universe. He’d posted a picture of a sunset yesterday. A sunset. Normally, I’d just appreciate the aesthetic beauty. But this was Jake Echa. So, naturally, I zoomed in. Was that a hint of orange in his eyes, mirroring the sky? Was the cloud formation shaped like a… a tiny, shimmering heart? My brain was a hyperactive squirrel, burying nuts of meaning in every pixel.

“He posted a picture of a coffee cup this morning,” I muttered to myself, scrolling back through the endless feed. “Does he like coffee? Does he remember that I practically live at ‘The Daily Grind’ down the street? Maybe he’s hinting that he’ll be there soon!” My heart did a little flutter, a nervous hummingbird trapped in my ribcage.

Suddenly, a text message pinged, shattering my delicate web of speculation.

Chloe: U still obsessing? It's 2 AM. Go to sleep before you start seeing his face in your oatmeal.

Me: I’m not obsessing! I’m conducting vital research.

Chloe: Research on what? The optimal angle to hold your phone to capture your own reflection in his profile pic?

Me: Hilarious. No. I’m trying to see if he’s dropped any hints about coming back to town. You know, for… things.

Chloe: Hints? Echa, the man posts about his lunch. If he wanted to see you, he’d post a selfie with a giant arrow pointing to your house. And even then, I’d be skeptical.

Me: It’s not like that! It was a moment. We made eye contact. He smiled.

Chloe: He probably smiles at everyone, Echa. It’s part of the whole ‘charming idol’ package. Like the dazzling smile, the swoon-worthy voice, and the ability to make millions of dollars selling overpriced merchandise.

Me: But what if he remembers me? What if that brief encounter, that accidental bump, was more significant to him than it was to me?

Chloe: Oh, honey. You’re really going down the rabbit hole, aren’t you? He’s a celebrity. You’re… you. You met him for approximately 3.7 seconds in the produce aisle. The most significant thing that happened to him that day was probably deciding between organic kale and regular kale.

I sighed, a puff of air escaping my lips that felt heavy with the weight of my unrealistic dreams. Chloe was right, of course. She always was. She was the voice of reason in my chaotic, celebrity-obsessed universe. But still. That smile. It felt… different. Genuine. Like he’d seen past the spilled groceries and the panicked stammering to something else. Or maybe I was just projecting.

I decided to try a different tactic. Instead of digging through his past, I’d look for clues in his present. I scrolled through his recent stories. A blurry shot of a cityscape. A boomerang of him laughing with friends. Then, a picture of a latte. Not just any latte, but a latte with intricate foam art. My heart leaped.

“Chloe!” I typed furiously. “He just posted a latte with a swan on it! A SWAN! Do you know where they do swan lattes around here?”

Chloe: Probably a hundred places. Google it. And maybe, just maybe, consider that he just likes pretty coffee and isn’t sending you a secret coded message.

Me: But he never posts food! This is huge! It has to mean something.

Chloe: It means he was thirsty and the barista was artistic. Echa, please. Get some sleep. We have to go to that ridiculously overpriced brunch tomorrow.

I reluctantly closed Instagram, the swan latte image burned into my retinas. Chloe was right. I was being ridiculous. But then, a thought, a tiny spark of possibility, ignited in the back of my mind. There was that cafe, “The Daily Grind,” the one I practically lived at. They did pretty good latte art. And Jake Echa did have a concert scheduled in our city next month. What if… what if he was in town already, scouting out the local scene, looking for a good cup of coffee?

The next morning, armed with Chloe’s skeptical eye and my own unwavering, albeit slightly delusional, hope, we headed to brunch. The cafe was buzzing, filled with the clatter of plates and the murmur of conversations. Chloe, ever the pragmatist, ordered avocado toast. I, on the other hand, felt a strange pull towards the coffee menu.

“You know,” I said, trying to sound casual, “I heard ‘The Daily Grind’ is pretty good. They do that fancy latte art, right?”

Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Are you planning a latte art intervention, Echa? Because I’m pretty sure Jake Echa has bigger things on his mind than the structural integrity of milk foam.”

“No, I just… I like good coffee,” I mumbled, my cheeks flushing.

As we waited for our food, my eyes scanned the room, a nervous tic I’d developed in recent weeks. Every man who walked in, every tall figure with dark hair, sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. It was exhausting.

Then, it happened.

The bell above the door jingled, and a hush fell over the immediate vicinity. Heads turned. And there he was. Jake Echa. He wasn’t wearing a stage outfit or a designer suit. He was in jeans and a simple t-shirt, looking surprisingly… normal. But the aura, the undeniable star power, was still there, radiating off him like heat from a summer sidewalk.

My breath hitched. My hands, which had been idly fiddling with my napkin, suddenly felt clammy. Chloe, bless her pragmatic heart, gave me a subtle nudge. "Deep breaths, Echa. Remember the oatmeal rule."

Jake scanned the room, a slight frown on his face, as if searching for someone. My heart hammered against my ribs. Was he looking for a table? Was he lost? Was he… was he going to order a coffee?

He approached the counter, and my eyes followed his every move, a silent, devoted documentary filmmaker. He ordered a black coffee. Of course. The man was too cool for swan lattes. As he waited, his gaze swept across the room again, and for a fleeting moment, his eyes met mine.

And he smiled.

It wasn’t the practiced, stage smile. It was a small, almost shy smile, the kind you give someone you vaguely recognize. My brain short-circuited. Did he remember me? Was this it? Was this the universe finally delivering on its promise?

Before I could even process the implications, before I could spontaneously combust into a pile of fangirl glitter, a barista called his name. He grabbed his coffee, gave a polite nod to the person next to him, and walked out.

The moment was gone. Vanished. Like a whisper on the wind.

Chloe leaned in. “Okay, so he smiled at you. Big deal. Now can we please talk about something other than Jake Echa for the next five minutes?”

I just nodded, my mind still reeling. He’d smiled at me. He’d seen me. And for a split second, I thought he’d… hesitated? Like he’d almost said something? Or was that just my overactive imagination, fueled by a potent cocktail of caffeine and wishful thinking?

That night, I was back on my phone, scrolling through Jake’s feed with renewed vigor. The sunset picture. The coffee cup. The latte art. Now, the smile. I was convinced it was all connected. A breadcrumb trail leading me to… somewhere.

“Chloe,” I texted, my fingers flying across the screen. “He was at ‘The Daily Grind’ this morning. I saw him.”

Chloe: You stalked him to a coffee shop? Echa, that’s a new level of commitment.

Me: I didn’t stalk him! We were at the same brunch place, and then he went to ‘The Daily Grind’ right after. And he smiled at me!

Chloe: He probably thought you were one of the waitstaff. Or maybe he was just being polite. Don’t read into it.

Me: But he never posts about coffee! And the swan latte was yesterday! It’s too much of a coincidence. I think… I think he’s coming back to town for the concert, and he’s checking out the local spots. And maybe, just maybe, he remembers me from the grocery store.

Chloe: And maybe, just maybe, pigs will fly and sing opera. Look, Echa, I love your enthusiasm, I really do. But you’re setting yourself up for a massive disappointment. He’s a star. You’re… you. You met once, briefly. It’s not a rom-com.

I stared at her message, a familiar ache settling in my chest. Chloe was right. It wasn’t a rom-com. Rom-coms had meet-cutes that led to grand gestures, not awkward encounters in the produce aisle followed by endless social media stalking.

But then, a new post popped up on Jake’s Instagram. It was a picture of the city skyline, taken from a high vantage point. And the caption read: “Thinking of staying a little longer. There’s something about this city…”

My breath hitched. This was it. This was the sign. The universe, finally, was speaking my language. Chloe could say what she wanted, but I knew. I just knew that this was more than a coincidence. This was destiny. And I was going to be ready for it. Even if it meant I had to spend my evenings analyzing latte foam and deciphering cryptic Instagram captions. Because somewhere, in the grand, chaotic tapestry of Jake Echa’s life, there was a thread meant for me. And I was determined to find it. Even if it took a million late nights and a million more eye-rolls from Chloe.
