The air in the village square, once thick with the scent of baking bread and blooming jasmine, now hung heavy with a chilling dread. Flames licked greedily at the thatched roofs, their hungry tongues devouring homes that had stood for generations. The screams of the villagers, once joyous songs of harvest and celebration, were now choked cries of terror. Nour Eldin, a silhouette against the inferno, surveyed the chaos with a cruel satisfaction. His eyes, like chips of obsidian, scanned the fleeing figures, searching for something more than just panicked souls. He sought a specific kind of despair, one that would break the spirit of his quarry.

Kamal, his heart a leaden weight in his chest, stumbled through the smoke-choked streets. His hands, still raw from the frantic efforts to douse the flames, trembled. He saw a small child, separated from her mother, weeping inconsolably near a burning cart. For a fleeting moment, a surge of raw power coursed through him, a desperate urge to shield the child, to push back the flames. But it was untamed, wild, and flickered out as quickly as it ignited, leaving him feeling more helpless than before.

“Where are they?” he rasped, his voice hoarse with smoke and fear. He pushed through the throng, his gaze darting from face to face. His eyes landed on Old Man Hemlock, his usually cheerful face etched with a sorrow deeper than any Kamal had ever witnessed.
