Chapter 6
Hay on Velvet
He emerges from the bakkie, a small velvet box in his hand. Maya notices it’s dusted with hay, a subtle nod to their shared history and inside joke.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm, comforting blanket over the farm, felt more like a spotlight today, precisely on Maya. It highlighted the frantic thrumming of her heart against her ribs, a drum solo of pure anxiety. Every rustle of leaves, every distant bleat of a sheep, seemed to mock the silence from her boyfriend.
