Chapter 5
The Familiar Bakkie
Her heart leaps as his old bakkie finally rumbles into view. Relief washes over her, but his nervous demeanor hints at something more significant than just lateness.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm, golden blanket across the fields, felt a little sharp today, the kind of light that made Maya squint. She shifted her weight, the rough hessian of the sack against her arms a familiar, comforting texture. But comfort was rapidly being replaced by a gnawing unease. It had been hours. Hours since her phone had buzzed with anything other than the chirping of crickets and the distant bleating of sheep. Hours since his usual midday check-in. Her fingers traced the worn denim of her jeans, a nervous habit she’d picked up in the last hour. The hay bales, usually her silent, sturdy companions, seemed to lean in, their golden stalks whispering questions she couldn’t answer.

The sun was starting its slow descent, painting the sky in bruised purples and fiery oranges, a spectacle Maya usually loved. Tonight, it just felt like a ticking clock, each passing minute a heavier weight on her chest. She replayed their last conversation in her head, searching for any hint of trouble, any reason for this uncharacteristic silence. Nothing. A flicker of movement at the far end of the track leading to the farm stall caught her eye. Her breath hitched. It was too far to make out the make or model, but the silhouette, the way it bounced a little too enthusiastically over the uneven ground… it was him. Her heart, which had been doing a frantic tap dance against her ribs for the better part of the afternoon, finally gave a great, relieved leap. It was his old bakkie. The battered, dependable workhorse that had carried them on countless adventures, from impromptu picnics by the river to late-night runs for ice cream.
