The sun, a benevolent eye in the vast blue, had already begun its midday climb, casting long, lazy shadows across the dusty farmyard. Maya, her hands dusted with the fine, golden powder of dried grass, hummed a tuneless melody as she wrestled another bale onto the stack. The scent of sun-baked hay, a familiar perfume that clung to her clothes and skin, filled her lungs with each breath. It was a scent that had become inextricably linked with a certain kind of happiness, a warm, comforting aroma that reminded her of laughter, of shared secrets, and of a particular, slightly ridiculous, text message.

Today, however, the familiar scent felt a little… heavier. The usual cheerful banter with the early morning customers had faded, replaced by a quiet that was beginning to prickle at Maya’s nerves. Her boyfriend, typically a creature of punctuality, was late. Not just a bit late, but *really* late. And worse, there was no text. No chirpy “running a little behind, my love,” no silly emoji, not even a cryptic “thinking of you.” Just silence. A vast, echoing silence that seemed to swallow the usual farmyard sounds.

She checked her phone for the tenth time in as many minutes. The screen glowed back, stubbornly blank. No new messages. No missed calls. Her thumb hovered over his contact, a quick tap away from sending a barrage of worried questions, but she held back. He’d know if something was truly wrong. He always did. But today, the absence of his usual communication felt like a gaping hole in the rhythm of her day.
