Discussions about wedding plans begin, with Maya playfully insisting on incorporating hay motifs, much to her fiancé's amusement and agreement.
The morning sun, a buttery smear across the sky, found Maya humming as she expertly buttered toast. The familiar scent of coffee, rich and dark, mingled with the fainter, sweeter aroma of the homemade marmalade she’d painstakingly jarred last autumn. Life, for the most part, felt as warm and comforting as this breakfast. It had been a few weeks since the hay-covered velvet box had been presented, since the joyous, slightly teary “yes” had echoed through the quiet afternoon air. Now, the whirlwind of engagement had settled into a cozy, excited buzz.
“So,” her fiancé began, his voice a low rumble that always sent a pleasant shiver down her spine, “I was thinking, for the invitations. Maybe something a bit… elegant?” He paused, a mischievous glint in his eyes that Maya knew all too well. “Perhaps a nice, crisp font, some tasteful calligraphy?”
Maya, mid-sip of her coffee, set the mug down with a decisive clink. “Elegant, yes. But also, you know, *us*.” She gestured vaguely with her toast. “We can’t just *not* acknowledge the hay. It’s practically a third member of this relationship.”
