Chapter 5
Insanity Squared
Pip revels in the over-the-top affection, interpreting it as the ultimate party game. His 'looney' joy intensifies, his laughter echoing louder. The monsters' plan backfires spectacularly, fueling his delight.
Pip, bless his cotton socks and perpetually sunny disposition, was having the time of his life. The spectral embrace of Seraphina the Spectral Weaver, meant to be a chilling caress that would freeze the very marrow in his bones, felt more like a particularly enthusiastic hug from a cloud made of cobwebs. Her dramatic pronouncements of undying, terrifying affection – “Oh, my sweet, foolish mortal! Feel the icy grip of eternal despair!” – were met with a delighted shriek and a request for a piggyback ride.
Bartholomew ‘Barty’ Bones, whose spectral form usually sent shivers down the spines of even the most hardened ghost hunters, was adrift in a sea of bewildered exasperation. He’d tried everything. The classic rattling chains, the sudden, ear-splitting wails, the disembodied whispers that promised eternal torment. Pip, however, had merely clapped his hands with glee. “Wow, Mr. Bones! Are those your maracas? They make such a fun noise!” Barty had even resorted to morphing into a truly hideous, multi-limbed creature, all fangs and glowing eyes, a sight that had sent brave knights fleeing in terror. Pip, on the other hand, had squinted, tilted his head, and declared, “Ooh, you look like a very fancy octopus! Can you juggle?”
The gargoyle, Grumble, who usually had a permanent scowl etched into his stony features, found his own attempts at intimidation dissolving into bewildered grunts. He’d tried to unleash a guttural roar that could shake the very foundations of Gloomstone Castle. Pip had simply giggled and asked if he wanted to play ‘Simon Says’ with roaring. Grumble, a creature of habit and gruffness, found himself momentarily speechless, his stony jaw hanging slightly ajar.
