Lyra's True Strength
The air in the small, makeshift camp was thick with the scent of pine and the lingering unease of our journey. We’d found a relatively sheltered hollow, a temporary reprieve from the relentless wind that whipped through the jagged peaks. Lyra, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy and cheerful banter, was unusually quiet. She sat by the sputtering fire, her gaze fixed on the dancing flames, her usual sparkle dimmed. I watched her, a prickle of concern weaving through me. Lyra’s laughter, though sometimes a shield, was as much a part of her as her bright, inquisitive eyes. Seeing it absent felt like a shadow falling over our little band.
Roric was sharpening his axe with a rhythmic scrape, his brow furrowed in concentration. Bowen was tending to our meager supplies, his movements efficient and quiet, a comforting presence even in his silence. Kael, as always, was a figure of mystery, hunched over a tattered map by the edge of the firelight, his lips moving in a silent study. I was mending a tear in my worn tunic, the needle a familiar weight in my fingers, but my attention kept drifting back to Lyra.
Finally, I set down my sewing. "Lyra?" I asked softly, my voice barely disturbing the quiet. "Are you alright?"
