The air in the small, makeshift camp was thick with the scent of pine needles and the metallic tang of old blood. Lyra had done her best, her deft hands working with herbs and bandages, but Roric was still a shadow of his usual gruff self. He lay propped against a moss-covered log, his breathing shallow, his eyes fixed on the flickering flames of our meager fire. The goblin ambush had been a brutal awakening, a stark reminder of the thin line between life and death that we walked.

Bowen sat beside him, a silent sentinel. His sword lay across his lap, its polished surface reflecting the firelight, a stark contrast to the weariness etched on his face. I watched them from a distance, my bow resting against my shoulder, an arrow nocked but held loosely. Kael was off somewhere, presumably communing with the ancient trees or deciphering some forgotten inscription. Lyra, ever the tireless nurturer, was tending to the remaining wounds and preparing a meager evening meal.

The silence between Roric and Bowen stretched, punctuated only by the crackling fire and the distant hoot of an owl. It was a silence heavy with unspoken things. I could feel it, a palpable weight in the air, and it drew me closer, a moth to a flame. My own past failures, a constant companion, seemed to whisper in the shadows, urging me to understand.
