The Goblin Ambush
The air in the Whispering Woods had turned from damp and earthy to something thick and cloying, a scent I couldn't quite place but which prickled the back of my throat. We'd been pushing through the tangled undergrowth for what felt like days, the canopy above a perpetual twilight that did little to lift my spirits. Lyra, ever the beacon of forced cheer, had been humming a jaunty tune just moments before, but even her melody had faltered, replaced by an anxious silence. Roric walked with his usual grim determination, his hand never far from the hilt of his broadsword. Kael, as always, was an enigma, his gaze darting into the shadows with an unnerving intensity. And Bowen… Bowen walked beside me, his presence a steady warmth against the creeping unease.
The first sign was a rustle, too deliberate to be a mere woodland creature. Then another, closer. Roric stiffened, raising a hand to halt our progress. "Ambush," he rasped, his voice low and guttural. The word hung in the air, heavy with foreboding.
Before I could even nock an arrow, the woods exploded. A cacophony of guttural snarls and the sickening thud of weapons meeting flesh erupted from the dense foliage. Goblins. Scores of them, their misshapen forms bristling with crude blades and jagged spears. They swarmed from the trees, their eyes glinting with a feral hunger.
