The wind howled a mournful song through the jagged peaks, a constant, biting reminder of how far we were from the comfort of hearth and home. Each gust tugged at our cloaks, threatening to pull us from the precarious ledge we’d been traversing for what felt like days. Below, a swirling abyss of mist obscured the true depth of the chasm, a silent testament to the unforgiving nature of these mountains. Lyra, ever the optimist, had declared them “breathtakingly terrifying,” a sentiment I couldn’t entirely disagree with, though my focus was less on the beauty and more on the sheer, unyielding rock face that was our only path forward.

Kael, as usual, was several paces ahead, his movements fluid and unnervingly silent. He moved as if the treacherous terrain were a paved road, his keen eyes scanning the rock ahead, his fingers occasionally brushing against the cold stone. Roric grumbled behind me, his heavy boots crunching on loose scree, a sound that set my teeth on edge. He kept glancing at Kael, his brow furrowed with a familiar suspicion. I understood Roric’s unease. Kael was an enigma, a walking repository of forgotten lore, but his silence was as impenetrable as the mountains themselves.

“Anything, Kael?” Bowen’s voice, steady and calm, cut through the wind’s wail. He was walking beside me, his broad shoulder a comforting presence, his sword a reassuring weight at his hip.
