Chapter 4
The Serpent's Pass
The air thinned with every upward step, biting at our exposed skin and stealing the breath from our lungs. Jagged peaks, like the teeth of some ancient, slumbering beast, clawed at the bruised sky. The pass widened unexpectedly, opening onto a sheer cliff face that shimmered with an unnatural, silvery sheen. It was beautiful, in a stark, unforgiving way. But beauty in these lands rarely came without a price. Lyra gasped, her humming abruptly ceasing. “By the gods,” she breathed, pointing a trembling finger. “Look.”
